How long does it take to recover from a holiday?

When I was growing up, I used to hate the end of Summer, but not for the usual reason. I hated it because it dragged by, and all I really wanted was to be back in school.

Classroom with Three Figures

By the end of Summer, I was always itching to get back to my plastic chair and wooden desk. The anticipation of weekend football matches and – my absolute favorite – tests.

Yes, I loved tests. They were basically my measure of how worthy I was as a human being.

Yes, I also spent quite a bit of time in therapy.

Now that I’m grown up and working a real job, I hate the end of Summer for the usual reasons. The days are growing noticeably shorter and the weather is cooling off. All of the exciting vacation plans I made in the Spring are now over. I’m counting the days till Christmas.

But even though September will be here before the week is over, my brain still feels like it’s on holiday.

Maybe by Christmas I’ll be able to concentrate again.

Did you all have a good Summer? What was the best thing that happened? How long does it take you to get back into the rhythm of life after a holiday?

  1. this summer wasn’ t really great: i didn’t go on holiday and the majority of time i was sick so i’m a bit disappointed because i would have loved one day or two just to change the rythm, scenery and everything.
But didn’t happen sad yes, life threatening no so it will be ok.
The positive part is that since i didn’t leave and was stuck at home i had more time to make some handmade gifts and i like to show my appreciation that way. I also participtef in my first read a thon so there were positive things this summers just not the ones i expected.

When i do go on holidays though it can happen that i’m so stressed or anxious that after my return i’m more spent than before leaving ^^

    1. Miki, I’m so sorry this has been a difficult summer. I really hope that things get better and your Autumn is full of fun, good health and great books. 🙂

  2. I am thankful for our week long trip to the beach with family this summer. It seems to take me at least a couple of days to get back into real life’s rhythms after a vacation.
I wish we could have gone more places but time (and money) always seem to be allotted to other, less exciting but more necessary, things.

  3. It wasn’t the greatest summer for me. I had to have back surgery the first of July and have been doing physical therapy and walking every day. I had been having back problems since January so the whole year has not been the greatest. Things are starting to look up now. So things will get better I am sure.

  4. It has been a long and busy summer for us. My husband has Stage 4 Lymphoma Cancer and we have spent most of our time going back and forth to VA. The good news is that he is feeling better, so the chemo appears to be working. Really looking forward to Labor Day since it will be a day of rest for us.

  5. When I was a kid we always went on vacation in August and when we came home had to get ready for school. It’s already turned a bit cool so I feel that this summer is pretty much over too. But that’s ok cause I really do enjoy fall (except for it getting dark earlier & earlier).

  6. No vacations – not in our budget anymore but had some exciting events and a few more coming up soon. My husband’s uncle married his girlfriend of 27 years (about time lol), we’re having a 90th birthday party for my mom on 9/1 and my nephew’s wife is expecting her first child at 42 (she had 3 miscarriages) so we just had the shower and she’s going in for a c-section (baby is breech) on Sept. 6th. His sister has 7 kids so it’s been hard for them but now everyone is very excited. So all good things!
